Lifestyle Medicine 2015 – Looking Onward & Upward
Amanda McKinney, MD
It’s a privilege to serve as chair of the Planning Committee for ACLM’s Lifestyle Medicine 2015 conference, with this year’s not-to-be-missed event set for November 1-4, 2015 in Music City USA, Nashville, TN.
As we countdown to the June 15th expiration of our Early Bird registration discount, it’s hard to believe that spring is nearly over. The days are getting longer, although there’s still never enough time to accomplish all that needs to be done. I find this to be particularly true in the burgeoning field of Lifestyle Medicine. If you’re reading this, you have likely already come to the conclusion that the only way to reverse the epidemics of obesity and chronic disease is via comprehensive lifestyle change on a population level. And, if you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered how you can possibly escape the traditional seven minute visit, with the patient leaving your office with nothing more than a pharmaceutical prescription and a three-month follow up. The good news is that there is a true transformation of health care emerging that goes beyond the ACA and insurance reform: Lifestyle Medicine is at the forefront.
All the more reason I want to urge you to attend the CME accredited Lifestyle Medicine 2015—an event which has doubled in attendance each of the past four years. This year’s event will be headlined by ACLM President David Katz, MD, MPH, recently named to the top 25 of the 100 Most Influential People in Health & Fitness.
A panel discussion focused on the role of Lifestyle Medicine in population health and health care transformation will kick-off this year’s event, which will be held at the beautiful Renaissance Nashville. The conference theme is “Integrating Evidence into Practice.” We all know what the evidence shows—that poor, and oftentimes inevitable, lifestyle choices are responsible for 80% of chronic disease. What we struggle with is how to put this evidence into action. The outstanding line-up of diverse speakers will share their collective experiences on what works and what doesn't in helping people adopt healthier lifestyle behaviors.
In addition to Dr. Katz, keynote speakers this year include:
What I’m looking forward to most in Nashville is the wide coverage of topics, ranging from the classic baselines of nutrition, exercise and behavior change, adding in practice models, coaching, mindfulness and more.
We’re excited to welcome Nashville-based Healthways as our Headline sponsor for this year’s event. New to the expansive sponsor pavilion this year are nutritious food company Kashi, Wellness Immersion travel company Focus43, and many more that cover the spectrum of lifestyle medicine. We’ve also had the privilege to welcome back sponsors such as Bragg, Metagenics, and CHIP Health.
